We’re calling it the Win-Win of 2021.
In a nutshell, this is a cost-free, once-in-a-lifetime chance for the largest landlord in Morningside Heights to help preserve our community’s diversity. The concept simultaneously offers opportunities to address decades of misunderstanding and mistrust in our neighborhood.
The Morningside Heights Community Coalition joins Manhattan Community Board 9 and our local and state elected officials in proposing that Columbia University maintain its rent-regulated apartments in perpetuity and offer leases to low-income, non-University-affiliated residents.
MHCC looks forward to advancing our preliminary discussions with Columbia on this concept. We expect some focused advocacy will be needed and we are asking for the engagement of our neighbors. Please join us in supporting this proposal.
